Technical tours will take place on Wednesday 10th September 2025. The buses will depart at 8:30 a.m. in front of the conference building and return to Freising between 6:30 and 8:00 p.m.. We will have lunch in a restaurant (not included in the conference fee) at about 1 p.m.. Please register for your desired tour here (first come, first served).

Technical Tour 1 - Vegetables and logistics
This tour will go to the "Nürnberger Knoblauchsland". It's one of the largest contiguous vegetable-growing areas in Germany, whose development dates back to the 8th century. This historically significant cultural landscape is located in the middle of the Nuremberg-Fürth-Erlangen triangle in Franconia.
The first stop will be at Höfler Gemüse. They produce tomato, cucumber, bell pepper and potted herbs on about 8 ha of greenhouses. Afterwards we will visit Haubner Gemüse, who is specialized on lettuce production in hydroponics. Then we will go to Franken Gemüse. It is the cooperative marketing organization of approximately 50 farms in the Nürnberger Knoblauchsland. The last stop will be at Beier-Jungpflanzen. The company produces vegetable seedlings in both trays and press pots and is part of the project ToGeP, which aims to minimize use of peat in production of vegetable seedlings.

Technical Tour 2 - Production of growing media
This tour will bring us to Rosenheim about 70 km south-east from Munich. However, we will start only 10 km away from Freising at the compost facility of Wurzer Umwelt in Eitting. The next stop is the Rosenheimer Erdenwerk. There we will be shown all steps involved in the production of growing media, from the processing of raw materials to mixing and packaging to logistics. After lunch we will continue our tour at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim. The team of Prof. Andreas Michanickl will explain us modern wood fiber processing by refiner technology. The last stop will be the research station Großkarolinenfeld. It is the research station of the Free State of Bavaria for paludiculture.

Technical Tour 3 - Urban green
All stops on this tour will be in the area of Munich. First we will visit the compost facility of Högl in the Hallertau, the world largest hop cultivation area. Afterwards we will visit two impressive examples for indoor greening: The hanging gardens in the Salvator Passage and the heads office complex.
At the end we will visit the tree nursery of the city of Munich. There we will see a trial on urban tree planting systems.

Technical Tour 4 - Pot plant production
This tour will go to north-west. First, we'll visit the 60.000 m² greenhouses of Dechant Gartenbau in Rain am Lech, who is part of the Gärtnersiedlung Rain am Lech. From there we will continue with the logistic center of the Dehner Gartencenter Group, Europe's largest garden center group with over 135 stores in Germany and Austria. At the headquarter in Rain am Lech, all logistics for the Dehner Group is handled. After lunch we will visit Gartenbau Hartmann in Münster. This company also belongs to the Gärtnersiedlung Rain am Lech and produces specialities as cocktail herbs on about 110.000 m². The last stop on our way back to Freising will be the growing media producing facility of Reterra Süd in Aichach near Augsburg. They produce high quality growing media for various purposes mainly from regional resources such as green waste compost, composted bark or recycled bricks.
